This group of complex lipids, named also phosphatides, are present in all cell membranes and may be classified into several sub-groups according to their molecular structure.
All are derived from the simplest compound,
Phosphatidic acid and cyclic or pyrophosphate
derivatives

– Phosphoglycerides containing one nitrogenous base
Ethanolamine glycerophospholipids
– Phosphoglycerides containing two glycerol molecules :
Diphosphatidylglycerol or Cardiolipin
